How to Wash and Care for a Lace Frontal Wig
Caring for your lace frontal wig properly is the key to making it last. Whether you're wearing it daily or for special occasions, regular cleaning keeps the hair looking fresh, soft, and tangle-free. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.
What You'll Need
- Sulphate-free shampoo
- Deep conditioner or hair mask
- Wide-tooth comb
- Microfibre towel
- Wig stand or mannequin head
- Leave-in conditioner (optional)
Step 1: Detangle Before Washing
Before wetting the wig, gently detangle it from the ends upward using a wide-tooth comb. This prevents matting and breakage during washing. Be especially gentle around the lace — it can tear if handled roughly.
Step 2: Rinse with Cool Water
Hold the wig under cool running water, working from the top (cap) downward in the direction of the hair shaft. Avoid scrubbing or bunching the hair up, as this causes tangling.
Step 3: Shampoo Gently
Apply a small amount of sulphate-free shampoo and work it through the hair in smooth, downward strokes. Pay attention to the cap and lace area, which can accumulate adhesive residue, sweat, and product build-up. Rinse thoroughly.
Step 4: Deep Condition
Apply a generous amount of deep conditioner from mid-length to the ends. Leave it on for 10–20 minutes before rinsing. This step restores moisture and keeps the hair soft and manageable — don't skip it!
Step 5: Pat Dry — Never Rub
Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel. Never rub the hair, as this roughens the cuticle and causes frizz. Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand for best results.
Step 6: Style Once Dry
Only style the wig once it's fully dry. Use a low-heat setting if using heat tools, and always apply a heat protectant first.
How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?
For daily wearers, washing every 7–10 days is recommended. If you wear your wig less frequently, every 2–4 weeks is sufficient. Washing too often can strip the hair of its natural moisture.
Storage Tips
- Store on a wig stand to maintain the style and shape.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity.
- Use a satin bag for travel or short-term storage.
